Caroline County Sheriff’s Office

The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is a full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to providing professional and courteous service to the citizens of Caroline County, Maryland. The Sheriff's Office is responsible for enforcing the laws of the State of Maryland and the ordinances of Caroline County. The Sheriff's Office also provides a variety of community service programs, including a K-9 Unit, a dive team, and a victim assistance unit.

History

The Caroline County Sheriff's Office was established in 1796. The first Sheriff,Colonel Thomas Smyth, was appointed by Governor John Hoskins Stone. The Sheriff's Office was initially housed in the county courthouse. In 1885, the Sheriff's Office moved into a new building on Market Street in Denton, Maryland. The current Sheriff's Office building was constructed in 1995

Organization

The Sheriff of Caroline County is responsible for managing all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff is elected to a four-year term and oversees a staff of more than 100 sworn and civilian personnel. The Sheriff’s Office is divided into several divisions:

  • The Patrol Division is responsible for responding to calls for service, conducting traffic enforcement, and patrolling the county.

  • The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for investigating crimes, conducting background checks, and serving warrants.

  • The K-9 Unit is comprised of several highly trained dogs and their handlers. The K-9 Unit is used to assist other divisions in finding missing persons and suspects, and detecting drugs and explosives.

  • The Dive Team is made up of a group of specially trained officers. The Dive Team searches for drowning victims, helps retrieve evidence from underwater locations, and assists other agencies with investigations.

  • The Victim Assistance Unit provides support to victims of crime. The Victim Assistance Unit helps victims of crime with everything from filing for a protective order to finding counseling services.
